Wi-Fi QR codes: the facts
- What the code holds
- The standard Wi-Fi format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:network name;P:password;; (H:true is added for hidden networks). Special characters ; , : and \ are escaped for you.
- Print size
- 1.5 to 2 in on a table or counter card, 4 in on a wall sign.
- Scan distance
- Cards in hand; wall signs from 3 to 4 ft.
- What breaks it
- A password change (the printed code holds the old one), captive login pages (the code joins the network but cannot fill in a portal), and older phones: some Android phones from before Android 10 need Google Lens or a scanner app, and some cannot join WPA3-only networks at all.
Questions
Does the Wi-Fi code work with WPA3?
Yes on current iPhones and Android phones: "WPA/WPA2/WPA3" uses the same code. Some older phones cannot join a WPA3-only network at all; a WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode network avoids that.
What happens when I change the Wi-Fi password?
The printed code still holds the old password, so print a new code. If you change passwords often, link a dynamic code to a page that shows the current one.
Is a Wi-Fi QR code static or dynamic?
Static. A wi-fi code holds the information itself, so it works with no internet connection and without us, but it cannot be edited after printing.
Can my Wi-Fi QR code look like art?

Does it expire?
Free static codes never expire. Dynamic codes keep redirecting to your last link even if you cancel your plan.
